Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
These days there seems to be many Christian circles being drawn toward the idea of being or becoming a Proverbs 31 Woman. And it is a blessing to hear that any lady would aspire to be such a woman. But today I want to view this topic from another angle; the man’s viewpoint.
Did you know that the Proverbs 31 Woman is married?
Yup! Take a look at Proverbs 31 verse 23, where it says, “Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.” Not only is she married, but her Proverbs 31 Husband, sits with the movers and shakers in the community and is involved in many aspects of community growth. Remember that when you see the word “gates” in the Old Testament that it is kind of like the term “downtown” that we use nowadays except more municipal than commercial. The “gates” is where leaders hang out, in other words. A Proverbs 31 Woman has a Proverbs 31 Husband who is a leader among leaders in the community.
Proverbs 31 verse 11
Or better yet, read verse 11, where you see a man who completely trusts his heart with his wife. Think about that one for a second, in a day and time where Biblical trust is almost non-existent between a husband and wife. Here you see a kind of trust where a dude actually takes off the macho “mask” for his wife and she is able to love the real dude inside. When she does this, then any kind of “pursuing” of female companionship he feels will naturally flow towards his Proverbs 31 Bride and not another female somewhere (ie. so that he shall have no need of spoil…verse 11b).
You’re not the boss of me…
We seem to constantly be asking ourselves as a culture, just who is the boss in a marriage? A man or a woman? This should be no surprise really. After all, Genesis 3:16 tells us this would happen. And there seems to be 2 main camps that folks tend to be in; either they believe the man is to rule over the wife or the man is not to rule over the wife (yeah! let’s keep it simple for a minute).
I bring this up because when I look closer at the Hebrew language in Today’s Proverbs, it looks a whole lot like the woman is in way more control than meets the eye. This is almost contradictory to the theology that a man is head of household in an almost tyrannical sense.
What came first the chicken or the egg? And which one is in charge?
So, while we in today’s culture debate back and forth over who is in charge of our house, the Proverbs 31 Woman and Proverbs 31 Husband have no need of such petty arguments, because she is too busy loving her man into his leadership position(s) that happen to be outside the home (in these verses), while he is doing his thing in the town square, all the while in their culture, they’d see this awesome dude accomplishing great tasks, conquering the world and say to themselves, “This man has an amazing wife!”. You know why they’d be saying that? Because Today’s Proverb shows us an example of a product of a Proverbs 31 Woman….and that’s a great man.
So, here’s a test…
Wanna know if you are a true Proverbs 31 Woman? Ask yourself this. When someone considers evidence as to whether or not I am a True Proverbs 31 Woman, who do I want them to recognize, me or my husband? This Proverb today, says that the people in the community saw the husband as evidence. He is not only seen as a great man, but also a product (or by-product maybe?) of a great woman, meaning (in my eyes at least) that she gets the credit for the good that her husband is doing. She created it in him.
Today’s Take Away For Me
So, debate all you want whether or not a man should rule over a woman. I myself, am graduating in my thought processes to believe that this “rulership” desire in the home is a distraction to the whole purpose behind marriage. I have to practice in actual deed, putting God as head of my household. Wanna know why? Because there is such debate as to who is in charge, and I tend to be a selfish dude myself. If God doesn’t help me do right by my future bride, I will not have a successful marriage. We will both wanna be the boss, I am sure of it. And God will so mold us into One Vessel, that we will both be the boss, because we are One Vessel. And the two became one flesh…
A little Tyrannical Humor to end this days devotions.
